The Red Alder (Alnus rubra) is a medium-sized broad-leaf tree native to the west coast of the USA, growing up to around 60ft tall. In forest settings, it develops a slightly tapered trunk with a narrow, rounded crown, while trees in open areas form a broad cone shape with crowns starting near the ground.
Its bright green, oval-shaped leaves have pointed tips and coarsely toothed edges that curl under slightly. The underside is greyish, and the hair-covered veins create a distinctive ladder-like pattern. Leaves remain green until they drop, adding seasonal interest.
