Originally native to south-eastern Europe and Asia Minor, the Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa) is thought to have been introduced to these islands by the Romans for its nuts - often ground into flour - and widely planted for its timber; but it now behaves like a native tree, particularly in South East England where it spreads through many woodlands by seed.

Sweet Chestnut is a large tree with an enormous girth and characteristic deeply furrowed spiralling bark.  The leaves are large, oblong and pointed with coarse teeth along the edges.

The current height of our Sweet Chestnut trees is approximately 20-40cm and they can be planted out all year round.
