Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) is a hardy evergreen tree well-suited to shaded areas, making it an excellent choice for woodland-style hedging or under-storey planting. Native to North America and now increasingly used in UK planting schemes, it offers a fine-textured, coniferous screen that thrives in cooler, moist environments.

These saplings grow reliably in a wide range of soils (excluding chalk) and are best planted in sheltered, damp areas—especially in western regions of the UK. Western Hemlock performs well alongside species like Douglas Fir and is particularly valued for its ability to tolerate deep shade. While it dislikes exposed conditions, it’s remarkably cold-hardy and will grow steadily in the right site.
