Downy Birch Trees - Betula pubescens

The Downy Birch (Betula pubescens) tree is a great medium tree with more upright branches than the Silver Birch though not dissimilar, with slightly browner bark rather than silver. In folklore bundles of birch twigs were used to drive out the spirits of the old year.

The Downy Birch is very common in Britain, particularly Scotland and thrives well in wet areas. Grows reasonably quickly reaching 10ft in 7 years.

The current height of the trees is approximately 30-50cm and they can be planted out all year round.

  • Plant in wet, dry, exposed and upland sites
  • Likes most damp soils
  • Pretty garden tree or mixed woodland 
  • Attracts an abundance of wildlife
