Douglas Fir Trees - Pseudotsuga menziesii

The Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is a tall conical tree. Needles grow all round the shoot but are parted on the upper and undersides leaving the shoot exposed. The light brown cones hang down and have long protruding bracts each with three prongs. Given good soils the tree grows well and produces some of Britains finest timber. On shallow soil it is more prone to disease and may be blown down easily.

Good Douglas Fir sites are quite limited, generally being restricted to fertile, sheltered valley slopes where deep soils allow the trees to grow to their potential and a degree of protection from wind damage is offered.

The current height of the trees is approximately 15-30cm and they can be planted out all year round.
